(Hello, Jana. When did you first start the viola? I want to know how you met Viola.)

A. The first time I ever picked up an instrument was when I was 5. My older sister had started learning the violin, and I didn’t want to miss out — so I started using her old violin, making some of the most improbable sounds that probably drew my parents crazy. I started to take music seriously when I became a part of a junior orchestra in sixth grade. The pieces we played didn’t require much difficult techniques, but the conductor always tried his best to pull out the expressivity of those young players. The Heavenly Sound Orchestra allowed me to listen closely to other existing instruments for the first time. It was playing in that group that really made me love —and understand — the beauty of harmonizing, of blending into the body of music, and I’m forever grateful for it. It was also then when I first noticed the viola. I would not have known that such an instrument existed (I probably would have thought it was just a bigger-sized violin) had it not been for the orchestra. But sitting next to the violist, I fell in love with its softness and gentleness. While it might not be the most conspicuous instrument out there, it connects the string section, bringing the violin and the cello together. I just found it to
be somewhat like myself — perhaps not the most noticeable person, but always trying to bring people together. I started playing the viola in eighth grade. Because I knew how to play the violin, it wasn’t too difficult for me to learn the viola.

(Lincoln Center for the United States, at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center to play in your performance was special performance I heard about that. Please explain whether the show and what the motivation of you to do the show.)

A. Playing an instrument and thus creating music, I learned about its positive effects on people. Music helps you express yourselves in a way that words cannot. Especially in cases when it is hard to connect with others, it seems that playing an instrument helps people to converse with each other. For such reasons, collaborating and supporting the Felice ensemble, an instrumental group of those with disabilities, was particularly a valuable experience for me. I felt really moved to be a part of this ensemble, to form the music with the members and take exquisite care of each note. I was so grateful to be with these members at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, to show the world that, yes, we can.

(Jangcheon holes to play in August this year. Jangcheon Hall, donating the full ticket sales is a concert held in Ukraine to help refugees know as a concert. Peace Concert a soloist with the participation in how I can hear?)

A. As a student, there aren’t that many ways for me to run a fundraiser for the refugees. The only method I used was to sell care packages, drinks, or candies at the school. Being able to use my talent to create a pleasant and enjoyable memory for the audience and further to help people in the pain of war was a truly meaningful experience. I think, more than anything, I really acquired some of the most valuable lessons by participating in this concert, and I’m so grateful to those who made it happen. As the saying goes, love does not lie only in receiving but also in sharing — I hope there will be more opportunities for me to express my care for the world and others in such concerts or otherwise.

(I wonder if you had any memorable episodes during your music activities such as performance and competition.)

A. There were multiple memorable experiences, but the most memorable one happened in Carnegie Hall. The concert order had changed at the last moment. I was supposed to perform my solo piece and then play with the Felice ensemble, but because of technical reasons, the Felice ensemble had to go on first. Because this was the first concert, I was apprehensive about my solo piece, but when I was told that it was moved to a later time, I became even more anxious. Backstage, waiting to enter the stage, I remember being just caught up in my worries about my own piece. It was then when a member behind me shouted out, “you got this!” I think I became embarrassed with myself right then and there. The ensemble must have worked so hard to be there, yet here I was, only concerned about my own piece. It immediately came to me that I must show at least the same dedication. The moment the door opened for us to enter, the members looked at each other and whispered, “we can do this.” I think this had been the most memorable incident of my music experiences.

(Jana, Even though I’m not a music major a lot of a challenge particularly, preparing for the concert? I think I will be and know-how to overcome the difficulties.)

A. As a non-professional violist, I played within an orchestra more often, not as a soloist. So this orchestral was definitely a challenge for me. I was used to being part of the
harmony, being the supporter, of listening to others and matching my sounds with them. I wasn’t as used to being the center of attention, expressing the piece as much as I could in front of a large audience. I was too worried about their judgments of me and the possibility of making a mistake and embarrassing myself in front of the whole crowd. But there were a few ways that I used to cope with my anxiety. The first piece of advice is to use image training. My teacher told me that whenever I practice, I must think I am standing on the stage, performing in a concert. But on the stage, I must trick myself into believing that I am in the practice room. That definitely helped me to be less nervous. The second method is to really live the music. I tell myself that on the moment that I put my bow on the string, I am Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Hindemith. I become the notes that I play. I can forget that I am on a stage but instead be excited about what is to come, to be more confident, because I am eager to be let out on the world, to have my own piece shown to the world.

(Finally, tell me if there’s your future plans and dreams, please.)

A. I would like to continue contributing to the well-being of the world while still playing the viola. Whether as an orchestral member, soloist, or simply a member of society, I would like to bring about happiness for those around me and thus create valuable and joyful memories for all. Although I have not yet had a clear idea of my future, if I stay true to myself, won’t I be able to find the right path for myself? Praying that such a day will come, I want to walk into the future with harmony and music.
