(Hello, congratulations on the album release. As far as I know, he is studying hard and is also engaged in music activities such as playing the violin and releasing music. Please introduce yourself briefly.)

A. Hello! My name is Sumin Han, a rising senior (17 years old) in Korea International School. I am a young musician who has been playing the violin and the piano since I was 5 years old.

(I enjoyed your violin performance album, and I wonder why you released the album with violin performance and what the violin means to you.)

A. My violin is a companion that stays by

my side through my ups and downs. It speaks a beautiful international language that unites the people of all gender, ages, and ethnicities. When I play the violin, I sense the means of connecting with my deeper self, the universe, and my place in it. The reason why I released this album is because I wanted to share my deepest ambition in music. I want people to feel all kinds of emotions while listening to my album, be it happiness, sadness, nostalgia or anger. I hope my music makes people forget everything surrounding them and simply enjoy the moment in a flash of a second.

Q. Meditation from Opera ‘Tha is’ for Violin and Piano의 곡으로 첫 번째 앨범을 발매하셨고, Monti Czardas를 두 번째 앨범으로 발매하시는데요, 이 곡들을 선택한 이유와 곡에 대한 간단한 설명 부탁드립니다.
(You released your first album as a song by Meditation from Opera ‘Thais’ for Violin and Piano, and you are releasing Monti Czardas as your second album, so please give us a brief explanation of why you chose these songs.)

A. Méditation is a symphonic intermezzo from the opera called Thaïs, composed by French composer Jules Massenet. In the opera, Alexandrian courtesan Thaïs is driven into hysterics by the monk’s words, seeing emptiness in her life. This 5-minute piece expresses Thaïs’ true purity of heart. The piece begins with musical expression andante religioso, meaning it is played in a moderately slow and devotional manner. As a violinist, I chose this piece primarily since the piece never fails to encapsulate my mind with its beautifully flowing improvisational embellishments. I ho

pe that my listeners capture a harmonizing peace while listening to this album. Another solo album that I released is Czardas which is a traditional Hungarian folk dance composed by the Italian composer Vittorio Monti. Unlike Méditation, Csárdás includes a quickened tempo, variety of dynamics, and melodies with robust energy. I sincerely love playing this piece since my emotions are stirred up to the most exalted level. Listeners, too, can find joy in feeling vibrant emotions, from mournfulness to cheerfulness. The piece captures resounding strings and grand chords with slow and schmoozy opening and a marvelous finale. To be honest, I’ve had th

e most fun while practicing this piece, especially since Czardas has a lively interplay of tempo, dynamic and character changes.

(You have performed a lot in Korea and the U.S. not only on the album release, but also on the violin. What is the most memorable performance among them?)

A. For the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform solo recitals and concerts in Lincoln Hall and Carnegie Hall, NY, but the most memorable concert I’ve performed was the orchestra concerts with children with disabilities. Ever since I was young, I was taught to never monopolize my achievements but share them with my surroundings. I have devoted the majority of my time during the weekends and summer/ winter break in helping children with disabilities to play the violin. I guided them to find their passion in music and helped them hold their own performances in Carnegie Hall, NY. I love spending my time discovering the inner talents of these children. It was a touching experience to perform a concert together and show the audience what we’ve practiced together for months. Another memorable performance was The Ukrainian Refugee Assistance Concert at Jangcheon Hall, Kore. It was my first time playing with an orchestra accompaniment. The piece I performed was the third movement (Finale) of the Bruch Violin Concerto. This piece opens with an intense, yet quiet, orchestral introduction which is soon followed with grand chords of the violin that dances with an energetic tempo. My favorite part of this piece is the shift to Romantic lyricism, a lovely melody which contrasts with the piece’s fiery melody. I’ve learned numerous techniques through my months of practice, and the fact that I was able to perform with an entire orchestra was a grateful and an unforgettable experience.

(Lastly, what are your future goals and dreams?)

A. I dream to become a beloved and incredibly passionate musician who never tries to monopolize my achievements but rather demonstrates pure generosity through the language of music. For the past years, I have bloomed my intuitive love of the violin as well as an insatiable curiosity about the “why” and “how” behind music. From now on, as a young violinist, I will not only continue to maximize her scope of musical interest by taking bold risks but also carry a bright awe to the community with the joy of boundlessly sharing this talent.
