[아티스트데일리 인터뷰-박준혁]

아티스트데일리가 오늘 만나 볼 신예 음악가는 박준혁이다. 플루트를 다루는 풍부한 감수성으로 이미 작곡 앨범을 발매한 그는 어린 나이에도 이미 꾸준한 음악 활동을 이어가고 있다. 그의 작품 세계를 작곡가 본인에게서 들어보자.
The new musician that Artist Daily will meet today is Junhyeok Park. He has already released a composition album with a rich sensibility to handle the flute, and is already continuing his music activities even at a young age. Let’s hear the world of his work from the composer himself.

Q. 안녕하세요, 우선 앨범 발매 축하드립니다. 간단한 자기소개 부탁드릴게요
(Hello, first of all, congratulations on the album release. Please give me a brief self-introduction)

안녕하세요. 한국 국제학교(KISJ) G10에 재학 중인 고등학생 박준혁입니다. 음악을 사랑하고 음악이 제 삶의 일부인 보통의 고등학생이에요. 저는 음악 장르는 구별 없이 많이 듣고 부르고 만드는 걸 좋아합니다. 일어나서 자는 순간까지 음악과 함께인 거 같긴 합니다. 특히 학업에 지쳐서 머릿속이 뿌연 안개로 가득 찬 듯 갑갑할 때 노래를 들으며 흥얼거리나 음악 작업을 하게 되면 힐링이 됩니다.
특히 저는 kisj 초등학교 때 입학하고 밴드 활동을 통해 플루트를 처음 접했는데요, 호기심으로 시작한 것이 이제는 제 인생에 있어 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 존재로 느껴집니다. 악기를 좀 더 잘 불고 좋은 소리를 내기 위해 꾸준한 연습을 해오면서 플루트와 함께 저도 성장해 온 거 같아요. 음악을 통한 꾸준한 자기 계발이 때론 아픈 성장통도 느끼게 해 주었지만 감성적인 제게 위로가 되는 수단이기도 합니다.

Hello. To briefly introduce myself, I am Junhyeok Park, a sophomore at Korea International School Jeju (KISJ). I have a huge passion for any genre of music; particularly singing and composing are my two go-tos. From day to night, music is always with me. Especially, at times when my academic work stresses me, music functions as a healing factor that enables me to get back on track.
The very first time I played the flute was when I was in fifth grade. It all started out with mere curiosity, but now that I feel like it was destiny that led my flute and I to stick to each other this long. My desire and effort that followed are what really let me improve so much as a great flute player, and furthermore, into an exceptional person overall. This self-developmentary process was indeed painful both mentally and physically; however, I think it was worth it looking at how much I have grown since I started playing this instrument.

Q. 사실 음악 활동이라고 하면 악기 연주만을 떠올리기 쉬운데 작곡을 같이 하고 있어요, 특별히 창작활동을 하고 있는 계기가 있을까요?
(In fact, when we think of music, we tend to think of only playing an instrument.
You are composing music together, is there any special opportunity for you to be creative?)

악기를 연주한다고 하면 다들 고전적인 악기로 “클래식 음악 하는구나”라고 생각들 하세요. 하지만 저는 고전음악의 중후하고 아름다운 선율을 현대적 기계음(미디 음악)과 접목한다면 어린 친구들도 다소 어렵고 다가가기 힘들게 느껴지는 클래식을 이질감 없이 접할 수 있다고 믿어요. 나아가서는 다양화된 사회 속에서 진화되는 음악을 접할 수 있죠. 저는 이러한 매력에 반해 작곡에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 음악을 공부해오면서 저만의 색깔과 느낌을 내고 싶었습니다. 꾸준히 클래식 작곡 공부와 미디 작업을 병행하고 있으며 최근에는 온라인으로 수강하는 코세라 수료증까지 따서 전문성을 높여가고 있습니다.
When most people think of a person playing an instrument, they immediately think that one plays classical music. But I believe that if I combine the profound and beautiful melody of classical music with engineered sounds (MIDI music), even ones who do not have a sophisticated understanding of music will be able to approach classical music without too much hesitation. Furthermore, those people can feel how music is evolving in such a diverse and rapidly changing society. These benefits of combining classical music and digital music are what truly inspire me when it comes to my creative output. Recently, I got a certificate for completing an online music course on Coursera, which enabled me to deeply learn about sound engineering.

Q. 본격적인 앨범 소개해 주시겠어요? 이번 제목도 그렇고 어떤 주제를 가지고 만드셨는지, 작곡가의 해설도 궁금합니다.
(Could you introduce the full-fledged album? I’m curious about the title, what kind of theme you made it with, and the composer’s commentary.)

먼저 앨범을 만들게 된 동기에 대해 말씀드릴게요. 솔직히 이번 앨범은 처음부터 명확한 동기를 가지고 시작한 앨범은 아니었어요. 오히려 제가 좋아하는 장르인 EDM과 힙합 음악을 만들어보자는 단순한 생각만을 가지고 앨범 작업을 시작했죠. 하지만 시간이 점차 지나 곡 작업의 마지막 단계인 목소리를 입히는 과정에 다다랐을 때, 그제야 비로소 이 앨범에서 ‘스타가 되고 싶은 나 자신을 보여줘야겠구나’ 하는 생각이 들었어요. 그래서 최종적으로 추가할 보컬 샘플들을 앨범의 주제에 최대한 부합시키고자 샘플들의 가사를 오랜 시간 유심히 살펴보았고, 결과적으로는 1’m am Star이라는 듣기 좋은 앨범이 나와 뿌듯합니다.
First of all, I will tell you about the motivation behind creating my album. Candidly speaking, I did not have a clear vision of what message I am going to convey through the album. Instead, I have rather focused on composing songs that are in my favorite genres—House and Hip Hop. However, as it got to the stage where it needed some final touches before it could be released to the public, that was the moment I realized what my album should be about: showing out my desire to be a star. So in order for the vocals to truly convey my message, I spent dozens of hours picking my samples, and now—as you can see—1’m a Star is finally out!

Q. 아직 학생이신 걸로 알고 있는데 다른 음악 활동이나 학업과 작곡을 병행하면서 느끼는 어려움은 없나요? 혹은 오히려 도움이 되는 경우들도 있을까요?
(I know you are still a student, but are there any difficulties you feel while doing other music activities or studying and composing at the same time? Or are there some cases where it might be more helpful?)

고등학생의 신분으로 제가 원하는 퀄리티의 곡을 만들기에는 시간적 제약이 많은 게 사실이죠. 끊임없는 숙제와 시험이 부담이 되지만 처음에 언급했듯 그런 지친 일상 속에서 저를 버틸 수 있게 해 주는 게 음악이기 때문에 자는 잠을 줄여가면서라도 음악은 포기하지 않고 있습니다. 제 하루 일과 중 가장 행복하고 힐링 되는 시간이니까요.
It is undeniable to say that as a high school student, making music and studying at the same time is extremely difficult. However, music does not feel like additional work to me at all but rather feels like a healing factor that functions as fuel for me to keep studying.

Q. 앞으로의 목표나 꿈이 있다면 어떤 건가요?
(What are your future goals or dreams?)

우선 현재는 플루트란 악기로 모든 사람들의 몸과 마음을 치유해 줄 수 있도록 훌륭하게 악기를 다룰 수 있게 해 내는 게 저의 목표예요. 사실 저는 순수 음악가가 목표는 아니어서 제가 지금 배우는 악기와 음악적 이론 그리고 미디 음악이라는 기술을 접목해서 누구라도 음악을 쉽게 접하고 게임처럼 가지고 놀 수 있는 무언가를 만들고 싶어요. 그게 앱이 됐던, 웹사이트가 됐던, 신체적 혹은 정신적으로 제약이 있는 장애우들이 음악 만들기가 어려운 것이 아닌 놀이로 여길 수 있었으면 좋겠어요. 악기는 장애우 친구들에게 있어 신체적, 정신적 제약이 있을 수 있기 때문에 다루기가 생각보다 쉽지 않으니까요. 음악에 대한 장애우들의 열정과 관심을 기술적인 면으로 쉽고 간단하게 그리고 즐겁게 표현해 낼 수 있도록 노력 중에 있습니다. 곧 좋은 결과물이 나오면 꼭 소식 전하겠습니다. 감사합니다!
Important than anything else, my ultimate goal is to help people heal their minds with music. My dream is not a musician, so instead of playing the flute for my own sake, I want other people to learn and have fun with music. I firmly believe that the combination of classical music and digital music, in any form of media—phone applications or websites, will enable those with physical and mental disabilities to have great pleasure with music. This is because playing an instrument is highly challenging and complicated. I am currently on my way to helping them express their passion and interest as easily and simply as possible through technology. I’ll be sure to let you know if I get any good results soon.
